Learning at Dame B’s doesn't just take place in the classroom. Across Pre-Prep and Prep, we take every opportunity to get out and about to expand our horizons.

Pre-Prep trips

We use day trips to introduce new experiences, that both educate and amuse, as well as building social skills and supporting emotional development.

Pre-prep trips

In Pre-Prep, trips might include:

Audley End Miniture Railway - Kindergaten

Just before Christmas, we travel on Santa's train with parents, carers and siblings - to meet the big man himself! En route, we learn about heritage, engineering – and share the seasonal stories that bind us together.

Rowley Hill Farm, Little Walden - Reception

Every week, our Reception children visit Rowley Hill, just a few miles from our site. We go in all weathers and love every minute. Activities include setting up a camp, building a house for the Three Little Pigs, finding out how binoculars work, testing their strength and learning to use a saw safely.

Boydells Dairy Farm

In summer, Boydells Farm is a firm favourite. Here we meet sheep who are the stars of the show at milking time. Families are invited to join us on these special days out.

Years 1 and 2

Year 1 and 2 travel a little further afield. Past trips have included Cambridge Folk Museum and the Fitzwilliam Museum, as well as Ely Cathedral

Local visits

We also run regular escorted trips to Saffron Walden, walking boldly in high-viz jackets, or taking the bus. Visits to the supermarket helps to develop maths skills, whilst other trips explore our local community, including a visit to Saffron Walden’s museum.

On every trip, our boys and girls soak up ideas and learn new skills, from staying safe outdoors, to teamwork and communicating what they’ve learnt.

Prep trips

In Snowdonia, U-shaped valleys transform from diagrams in to an awe-inspiring reality. The Tudors cease being storybook picture at Kentwell Manor, where pupils can dress, cook, eat and work in the period.

At the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute, scientists share their passion – and the secret life of viruses. Whilst in the National Gallery and the National Portrait Gallery, we investigate key figures from the curriculum as well as style, form and materials.

Prep day trips

There are plenty of places to learn located in a few miles of Dame B’s.

We go to Saffron Walden’s excellent museum (Year 6 have produced a video of the sights of Saffron Walden), as well as Cambridge for the theatre and the wonderful Fitzwilliam Museum.

“My favourite trip was when we went to see Carol Ann Duffy. I enjoyed the play at the end.” Daniel

Further afield

We regularly take trips to London to see our heritage, hone an appreciation of music and increase our knowledge of geography. Past visits include:

  • Museum of London
  • St Paul’s Cathedral
  • Thames Barrier
  • London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican
  • Houses of Parliament

“I liked the River Thames trip because you can go on boat rides and you get to know lots of information.” Charlotte

Residential trips

Self-confidence, social skills and the sense of triumph from mastering a physical challenge come together with learning on our three major residential trips.

York - Year 4

We focus largely on history, visiting the splendid Jorvik Centre, the imposing Minster and the stimulating Castle Museum.

Manor Adventure - Year 5

Manor Adventure in St Issey, Cornwall offers opportunities to learn about various geographical processes including coastal erosion and defence.

Pupils also experience a range of outdoor adventure activities covering our key learning habits, in a fun-filled week of new experiences.

Snowdon - Year 6

We’ve been taking pupils to Snowdon since 2006. We always try to reach the summit (usually successfully). We learn about physical geography, as well as exploring the natural environment by rock climbing, gorge scrambling and mountain walking.

Optional residential trips

Ski Trip - February half term

We join pupils from the Stephen Perse Junior School for a bi-annual ski trip.

French or Spanish Trip - October half term

Pupils enjoy a four-day trip to Northern France or Spain. It's a great opportunity to  practise language skills and to enjoy the culture and atmosphere of the country.
